Week 9: Application: Crisis Management and Response Leigh Lusignan Walden University CPSY 6100-1 – Introduction to Mental Health Counseling Facilitator: Dr. Cyndi Briggs July 29, 2015 Week 9: Discussion: Crisis Management and Response Today, we will be discussing two articles. We will be contemplating why there is an increasing focus on the crisis and catastrophes in the clinical mental health counseling profession; meditating on outcomes that contributed to the focus, including the tragedy of 9/11. In addition, Natural calamities will be addressed, (i.e., Hurricane Katrina) that we have seen in the media with an increased focus on the mental health of the survivors (as cited in Course Work Walden University, 2014). In summation, I will introduce sexual abuse which is one more instance of a trauma causing crisis. According to Satcher, Friel, Bell (2007) mental health is a publication of worldwide importance. As is the case for many health conditions, Satcher et al., (2007) stated, â€Å"There are discrepancies in mental health between groups defined publically, economically, geologically, and demographically† (p. 2541). Man-made and Natural Disasters The tragic events of 9/11 brought on an altruistic act when first responders, (e.g., counselors responded to a national appeal for mental health volunteers). They were sharing the emotional load of the trauma, and becoming a witness to the damage.
